Audio Story

This is a story by Nathan Bernier about the effects of the drought on Texas' Cattle Industry.

I like the story for its good use of natural sound, the colorfulness of the voices, and Bernier's vocalization which conveyed the "newsy-ness" of the story.

Podcast - TED Talks

TED talks is a podcast series that kind of covers anything and everything. Technically it's a conference that invites speakers to talk about a variety of topics, but they present the talks in a podcast format that you can download to a portable device and take with you. In that regard, they're kind of like NPR's regular programs.

Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity

This particular example is just Ken Robinson talking, but many of their podcasts have visual components, too. They're not overly long, and the speakers are generally punchy enough to hold your attention.

I guess most of all, I like that their content is forward-thinking or analytical. It's not a recitation of the news.

ESPN Radio:
Coach Mack Brown evaluates the Longhorns' 8-5 season, the Alamo Bowl, the expectations at UT and more.

-I like that they asked Mack Brown tough questions about this season and last season. And in return, Brown answered truthfully and didn't try to cover anything up.


-Mack Brown is obviously a credible source and a good person to talk to about Texas Football.


-The podcast is also entertaining and easy to listen to.

Example of podcast

This is a podcast done by Bill Simmons. He does a podcast for ESPN every week. He usually does more than one podcast a week. On this edition, he interviewed NBA legend, Larry Bird, to talk about everything from the MVP of the league to his favorite player of this generation.

-I used this as an example of a podcast because I enjoy basketball. Larry Bird is a great basketball player that you can learn from

-Also, Bill Simmons offers a wide variety of guests from sports to entertainment.

-The only drawback to Bill Simmons is that he doesn't have any real news stuff because he stays in a specific genre. His appeal only stretches so far.

Example of a Podcast

ESPN Podcast: NBA Today with Mike Yam and Tim Legler

I really enjoy this podcast because I am a huge basketball fan and these two analysts give good insight on the NBA. Today they talked about the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder and their point guard play. There is a daily blog which consists of different NBA information and different NBA analysts to get different perspectives. This is a great podcast for those who enjoy NBA.

Here is a podcast done by Terry Gross from NPR on the risks and rewards of practicing yoga. She interviews pulitzer prize winning journalist William Broad on his latest book, The Science of Yoga.

-I liked this podcast because I enjoy yoga and thought this podcast had some great insight into both the benefits and risks involved in the practice.

-NPR podcasts offers a wide range of news-related podcasts from politics, business and economy, arts and design, comedy, etc..

Example of a Podcast

Here is my example of a news-related podcast. It is brought to you by Alex Day, aka Nerimon, who is an English vlogger and musician with an active presence on YouTube. Although most of his podcasts deal with his personal life or projects, this particular video stuck out because of the very direct and personal way that he describes British politics and legislative structure. The name of the video is Hung Parliament in 3 Minutes:

I like this podcast because:

• I think videos where people talk directly to the audience on a personal level are a great way to engage people in news-related topics.
• He does a great job of taking a complicated issue and making it easy to understand.

The only bad thing?

• Right now, this video is not very timely. Although when it was first published in 2010 it was very relevant to what was going on in British politics, it doesn't reflect the outcome. Regardless, I thought this was great example of a podcast and I still think it can be informative without the context of the British parliamentary elections.
